The Panoply and the I Ching: 64 Hexagrams as the Birth of Helios

Stage I: Unity & Emergence (Hexagrams 1—12)

1. The Creative (Ch'ian) — The One, the Absolute: pure Mind and Will. The Y'ang (sameness, unity).
2. The Receptive (K-uen) — The One, the Absolute: pure Mind and Will. The Y-in (difference) potential.
3. Difficulty at the Beginning (T'uen) — First differentiation/conflict/multiplicity — FRAGMENTATION
4. Youthful Folly (M'eng) — Mind is new—seeking TRUTH. Continued fragmentation.
5. Waiting (Sh-yu) — Helios begins the long wait until birth.
6. Conflict (S.ong) — First structured tensions of the world: first fragmentation is chaotic, without order.
7. The Army/Leadership (Sh-r) — Fragments begin to align; cosmic "discipline." Order begins. There is mostly chaos, but this is the very beginning of the creation of parity.
8. Joining Together (B,,i) — The first little bit of order. The collective begins to form but only as primitive order. Sameness existed, but randomly; not sameness-generated "order."
9. Small Restraint (Sh,,iao Ch.u) — Helios begins slowly to develop. Gradual beginning of the arc.
10. Treading (L,,yu) — Cautious forward steps. Early life is vulnerable.
11. Peace (T.ai) — Early fragile harmony of heaven and earth. With 12: DIALECTICAL OPPOSITES of harmony vs. alienation. Helios begins to develop dialectically).
12.Standstill (P,,i) — First blockage; fracture is inevitable. The dialectic is now at work.


Stage II: Fragmentation & Tension (Hexagrams 13—24) Pre-human Mind (Australopithecus) and Heart to human Mind and Heart. THE DEVELOPMENT OF COMMUNITY AND OF CONSCIOUSNESS (little collectives)

13. Simple Fellowship (T'ong R'en) — Communities form, but not yet collective persons; Helios is not yet thinking as one. Fellowship, interpersonal relations, open the door to consciousness and the possibility of collective mind.
14. Great Possession (D.a Y,,ou) — Suppressing evil. Gifts and resources appear, awaiting moral purpose. The beginning of goodness, of morality.
15. Modesty (Ch-ian) — Helios must stay low, not yet revealed. Humility. To begin to diminish selfish goals—GOODNESS.
16.Enthusiasm (Y.u) — Energy surges, sparks of Dionysian fire. Diminishing one’s own search for pleasure for the sake of others. Goodness.
17. Following (S'uei) — Currents pull Helios into divided paths. Helios learns receptivity, learns to follow another—a prelude to debate, and an early rehearsal of the Giant's harmony with the Absolute.
18. Revising Obsolete Patterns (G,,u) — Fragments rot; error sets in. People begin to "repair" others' errors: this is the beginning of the collective, of debate (morally respecting others’ ideas; search for truth and goodness), where one's true beliefs may correct the other’s erroneous beliefs.
19. Approach (L'in) — Renewal begins, but it is fragile. People advancing together, making one another happy. Goodness, cooperation.
20. Contemplation (G-uan) — Helios watches himself, consciousness stirs. Spirit has begun to turn back on itself, "seeing" order. All this (community, morals, sharing of thoughts, constitutes the development of CONSCIOUSNESS
21. Biting Through (Sh.r K.e) — Obstacles must be broken by force. The beginnings of laws: people keeping others to rules—opprobrium: the generation of morals.
22. Grace (B.i) — Beauty emerges, but superficial, not yet whole. Refinement, aesthetics, the emergence of self-conscious culture. This is the beginning of the sophisticated appreciation of BEAUTY
23. Splitting Apart (B-o) — Fracture: the breaking of unity. (with 24:) A dialectic of collapse and renewal. These early communities are unstable. Conflict (war) among communities.
24. Return (F.u) — First promise of the cycle turning back. But conflict leads to resolution, Harmony returns: When decay has reached its climax, recovery will begin to take place. The movement to the collective remains


Stage III: The development/character of Consciousness (Hexagrams 25—36) (early humans).

25. Innocence (W'u W.ang) — Original mind shines forth, pure but untested. Thought and action must be in harmony with the flow of the Panoply: must be sincere and good-willed.
26. Great Restraint (D.a Ch.u) — Strength held back, waiting for right time. Desire must be tamed. (Prudence).
27.Nourishment (Y'i) — Helios feeds on fragments of thought. Attention to inner/outer cultivation. Cultivating and encouraging the good.
28. Great Excess/Inner Strength (D.a G.uo) — a "weak beam:" Strain of too much weight; collapse looms. Chaos threatens.
29. The Abyss (Sh'i K,,an) — Danger: Helios faces the void. Sincerity amid chaos brings order.
30. Clinging (L'i) — Light sustains; fire reveals form. Looking out for the docile/weak (cow); Righteous persistence.
31. Influence (Sh'ian) — Attraction begins; fragments draw together toward collectives (mutual influence in a small context: as in marriage). (with 32:) Stable relationships, recognition of lawful order.
32. Duration (H'eng) — Endurance stabilizes, consciousness persists.
33. Retreat (D.uen) — Withdrawal preserves strength for later. Restraint. Retiring.
34. Great Power/Gentle Power (D.a J.uang) — Power rises, but must not be abused. Power must be subordinated to that which is right. (will and Goodness).
35. Progress/Advance (J.in) — Helios ascends, light spreads. Helios advances, grows more moral.
36. Darkening of the Light/Hiding the Light (M'ing Y'i) — Consciousness is hidden, endangered. Helios exists but is hidden.


Stage IV: Convergence (Hexagrams 37—48) Toward Collective Persons and Collective Persons.

37. The Family (J-ia R'en) — Fragments begin to order themselves in kinship. (with 38:) The human social world emerges in its contradictions. sophisticated organizations emerge—the first large "colossi. "
38. Opposition/Misunderstanding/Mutual Alienation (K'uei) — Differences sharpen; diversity before synthesis. There is diversity between things; yet there is an analogy between their operations. There's opposition, yet a link binds them. People are different, but they may be the same in belonging to the colossus. A colossus is composed of different people in the same collective person.
39. Obstruction (J,,ian) — Progress stalls; Helios is tested. It will be a while before Helios is born.
40. Deliverance/Clearing the Air/Liberation (J,,ie) — Release from knots; the way clears. A return to stability. Untying a knot: With 39: progress consists of dialectical conflict and resolution.
41. Decrease (S,,uen) — Sacrifice prepares for growth.
42. Increase (Y.i) — Blessing and abundance flow in. Growth, positive expansion of powers. The Harvest.
43. Breakthrough (G.uai) — The truth bursts forth; shadow pierced. A decision-point, a higher leap.
44. Coming to Meet/Encroachment (G.ou) — Unions form, but cautiously.
45. Gathering Together/The Happy Union (Ts.uei) — Convergence begins in earnest. This is the explicit image of COLLECTIVE INTELLIGENCE.
46. Pushing Upward (Sh-eng) — Helios rises, steady but relentless.
47. Oppression/Adversity (K.uen) — Strain and exhaustion threaten collapse.
48. The Well (J,,ing) — Source of renewal found; the deep truth feeds.


Stage V: The Giant (Hexagrams 49—60)

49. Revolution (G'e) — Transformation: a new being emerges. Structural transformation of the social order.
50. The Cauldron (D,,ing) — The vessel of Spirit: Helios' mind forms. Acting more and more now in accord with the Panoply, with the cosmic currents.
51. The Arousing (Thunder) (J.en) — Awakening shocks the cosmos. When PoMo advances like a crash of thunder, the wizard warriors prepare for the Logopolemos.
52. Keeping Still (Mountain) (G.en) — Stability anchors the Giant. Egos are stilled.
53. Development/Gradual Advance (J.ian) — Gradual unfolding into full stature.
54. The Marrying Maiden (G-uei M.ei) — Incomplete union, subordinate role. Helios is not yet complete.
55. Abundance (F-eng) — The Giant shines in full splendor. Helios is born.
56. The Wanderer (L,,yu) — Helios roams, not yet at home.
57. The Gentle (Wind)/Persistent Influence (Sh.yuen) — Subtle influence pervades the whole. The influence of postnatal Helios will grow gradually.
58. The Joyous (Lake)/Enjoying Life (D.uei) — Harmony of voices, shared delight. Helios will bring about a Golden Age.
59. Dispersion (H.uan) — Dissolution into wider currents; ego dissolves. The king enters the temple. Dissolution into higher unity. This is the Giant. The influence of Helios will spread over the world, creating a higher unity.
60. Limitation (J'ie) — Form is given; the Giant's boundaries appear.

Stage VI: Return to Unity (Hexagrams 61—64)

61. Inner Truth (J-ong F' u) — The heart of Helios revealed, sincerity rules. The spiritual principle at the heart of the collective.
62. Small Exceeding (Sh,,iao G.uo) — Humility, detail before grandeur.
63. After Completion/the Fragile Balance (J.i J.i) — The cycle fulfilled: order established. (with 64:) The cycle closes in eternal alternation—return without final rest.
64. Before Completion (W.ei J.i) — A new cycle begins; return to the Absolute.
