Richard Crist
Richard Crist is a philosopher, writer, and independent researcher with a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the City University of New York Graduate Center. For many years he has explored questions concerning debate, collective intelligence, the evolution of civilization, and the search for truth.
His work has led him to develop the Truth Engine, a structured method of collaborative inquiry designed to help people with differing viewpoints work together in the search for truth. He is also the creator of the philosophical framework known as The Panoply and the debate game The Game of a Trillion Worlds, both of which explore the emergence of collective intelligence through reasoned dialogue and cooperation.
These ideas are brought together in The Cosmic Arc, an illustrated philosophical scroll that explores collective intelligence, collective personhood, biological and cultural evolution, the possibility of intelligence on vastly different scales, and the implications of these ideas for humanity's future. It deliberately combines philosophical argument with a lyrical and mythopoeic approach, inviting the reader not simply to accept its unconventional claims, but to question and test them.
Richard believes that vigorous disagreement, conducted with fairness and mutual respect, is one of the most powerful tools for discovering truth. Much of his work is concerned with developing intellectual structures in which disagreement can become a form of cooperative inquiry rather than merely a contest between opposing positions.
His interests range across philosophy, art, natural history, paleontology, logic, language, the history of science, myth, music, collective intelligence, and unidentified aerial phenomena. His writings include Unity and Variety in Painting, The Engine, The UFO Dialectic, Blender Steps, The Game of a Trillion Worlds, The Panoply, and The Cosmic Arc.
Richard lives in Kingston, New York.
