News as dialectic
The Truth Engine Chronicle is a new kind of news publication. Rather than reporting a controversial story from a single perspective, each Chronicle article presents the strongest competing interpretations in the form of a simulated debate.
The reader therefore encounters the controversy within the article itself, rather than having to move among publications representing different political, cultural, or intellectual viewpoints in order to discover the principal sides of the dispute. In this way, the Chronicle is intended to provide an alternative to the echo chambers that characterize much contemporary news media and to address the problem of journalistic bias structurally: competing interpretations are given a place within the same account.
But the Chronicle does more than report on a controversy. It is also a medium through which the controversy itself can proceed. New events, evidence, arguments, objections, and replies can alter the simulated debate as a story develops. Participants can challenge its treatment and propose improvements, while important developments in the Chronicle can contribute in turn to the relevant Canonical Dialectic in the Truth Engine Encyclopedia.
News reporting thus becomes not merely an account of the collaborative search for truth, but one of its instruments.
